Red flags vs. old wounds: telling the difference when you date again

Not every dropped stomach on a second date is a warning. Sometimes it’s an old wound catching a familiar smell. The trick isn’t to ignore the feeling — it’s to know which one it is before you decide what to do about it.

What's actually a red flag

Red flags are patterns in the other person's behavior, not spikes in your body. The clearest ones: talking about exes with contempt, pressure around the pace of the relationship, small dishonesties about small things, dismissiveness toward staff or strangers, anger that lands sideways. These are about them. You don't need history to see them; you just need attention.

What's usually an old wound

Old wounds are spikes in your body that don't quite match the situation. A perfectly kind text lands as too much. A pause between replies lands as abandonment. A compliment lands as suspicious. Those are your nervous system doing its job — checking the new person against the old one. That's not evidence about the person in front of you. That's evidence about what you're carrying.

The two-question test

  • Would a good friend, hearing only the facts, see the same problem? If yes, it's likely a real flag. If no, your body is running an older program.
  • Does the feeling get bigger with more information, or smaller? Real red flags get bigger the more you learn. Old wounds usually shrink when the person keeps behaving well.

What to do with an old wound waking up

Don't act on it immediately, and don't ignore it. Name it to yourself: this feels like the thing my ex used to do; I need one more week to see if this person is actually doing it. Give the new person the courtesy of the evidence. Give yourself the courtesy of not pretending the feeling isn't there.

The flags that aren't worth explaining away

Some things don't need a framework. If someone hurts you on purpose, if they pressure you sexually, if they lie about who they are — leave. You don't owe another date to make sure. Safety is the floor, not a judgment call. See our safety and support page for how LoveUIDo handles reports and blocks.
