Is it too late to find love at 55? The honest numbers
No. It isn’t. The numbers are much more on your side than the story in your head. Here’s what the data actually shows about meeting someone in your 50s and 60s — and the parts of the question the numbers can’t answer.

What the data actually shows
Per Pew Research (2023), about 20% of adults 50 to 64 and 13% of those 65 and up have used a dating site or app, and a majority of online daters say they are open to a serious relationship. Remarriage among adults 55 and older has risen steadily over the last few decades (per Pew Research, 2014). Meeting someone at 55, 60, or 65 is not a statistical outlier. It's ordinary.
What the numbers can't answer
The numbers can tell you the pool exists. They can't tell you how long it will take, or whether the specific person you're hoping for is currently single, or whether you'll like each other. Those are the parts that make the question feel scary. They're also the parts you can't control at any age.
The two stories to stop telling yourself
- "Everyone worth meeting is already taken." Roughly one in three adults 50 to 64 are unpartnered, and the share is higher after 65 (per a 2024 Bowling Green State University analysis of U.S. Census Bureau data). That is not "everyone." That's a lot of room.
- "I've missed my window." The window closes at death. Everything before that is still available. This is not a motivational line — it's an actuarial one.
What actually changes at 55 (and it isn't the odds)
What changes is honesty. Fewer people are willing to waste time. Fewer conversations are performative. That is a real advantage the first time around didn't have. Use it.
How to give yourself a real chance
Two things move the needle more than any app: being genuinely available (four evenings a month, minimum, held open) and telling the people already in your life that you're looking. Most partners after 50 are still met through friends. Apps widen the pool; your friends narrow it usefully. Do both.
